A1 Northumberland revamp works to begin

  • Published

Part of the A1 in Northumberland is to close for refurbishing work.

The next phase of work to refurbish Shilbottle Underpass and resurface the A1 at Alnwick will begin at the end of February.

It aims to improve safety and keep the road in a good condition but will bring diversions while the work takes place.

Work will take place on the southbound carriageway between the Deanmoor and Newton on the Moor North junctions from next week until 25 March.

The Highways Agency said the precise start of works date was dependent on suitable weather conditions.

Resurfacing work on the northbound carriageway has now been completed

During the work the A1 southbound carriageway will be closed from Newton on the Moor to Cawledge Burn.

Speed limit

Junctions and central reservation gaps between these points will be closed and there will be local diversions routes in place.

There will be a contra flow on the northbound carriageway and a 50mph speed limit will be in operation.

While the work is taking place one lane will be closed on the A1068 beneath the underpass to allow access to the underside of the bridge and traffic lights are in operation.

The resurfacing and underpass work will take place between 0700 GMT and 1900 GMT. The agency warned a number of night-time closures would be necessary on the A1 and A1068 below the underpass.

Severe weather

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place during the closures.

Highways Agency project manager, Shaun Cullumbine, said: "This work will increase road safety and provide an improved road surface.

"The structural repairs and resurfacing will minimise the need for future roadworks in the area. These works have proved challenging at times, due the severe weather in Northumberland before Christmas.

Works are scheduled to be completed in June.
