Newcastle University student dies from 'excess alcohol'

A student has died after drinking "excessive amounts of alcohol", police have said.

The 20-year-old at Newcastle University was taken to hospital on Tuesday in a "life threatening" condition. He died in hospital on Wednesday.

Northumbria Police said inquiries suggest his condition was a result of consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.

An investigation has been passed to the coroner.

A Newcastle University spokesman said: "It is with deep sadness we can confirm the death of one of our students.

"At the family's request, we have nothing further to add at this time."

'Devastating news'

Jack Taylor, president of the students' union said: "We are still in shock after hearing about the death of one of our students.

"Words can't express how saddened we are to hear of this devastating news.

"I'm sure our whole student body would join me in offering our deepest heartfelt condolences to his family."

The university said welfare services were offering additional support to his friends and other students who may be affected by the news.
