A teenager was killed and two women injured when a car hit a bus stop where they were waiting.

A grey BMW crashed into the stop on West Denton Way, in the West Denton area of Newcastle, shortly after 16:00 BST on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three men - one aged 24 and two aged 21 - have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are in police custody.

The teenager's family are being supported by specialist officers from Northumbria Police.

Sgt Craig Bartle said a "full and thorough investigation" was under way to establish what caused the crash and he appealed for anyone with information to contact the force.

One of the injured women is still in hospital being treated for injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening.

The other woman was not seriously hurt, a spokesperson for the force said.

A section of West Denton Way that was closed after the collision has since re-opened to traffic.
