More than 1,200 homes in Portrush were left without electricity after a helicopter struck power lines.

The incident happened at about 11:00 BST at Magherabuoy Road on Saturday. No injuries were reported.

Power was returned to the majority of homes within 40 minutes.

"A helicopter came into contact with an overhead line in the Portrush area at 11:00 BST interrupting supplies to approximately 1,240 customers," said NIE Networks.

"Power was restored to approximately 1,200 customers at 11:41."

NIE said that all remaining customers should have their power restored by 17:00 BST.

The Maclevennon Road, between Coleraine and Portrush, was closed between the Ballywillan Presbyterian Church and the Magherabuoy Road as NIE engineers repaired the power lines.
