A man in his 20s has died after a crash on a scrambler bike in Magherafelt in County Londonderry on Saturday afternoon.

The collision happened at around 16:00 BST on the Castledawson Road, police said.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision.

They are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or may have captured dashcam footage to contact them.

Mid-Ulster councillor Cora Corry said it was "awful to wake up this morning to the tragic news that a young life has been lost on our roads".

The Sinn Féin councillor added: "It's a really busy road and definitely something we're going to have to look at. It's been raised before and I know with it being such a busy road we're asking people to come forward to the police with any information they would have."

Christine McFlynn, an SDLP councillor in Mid-Ulster, said there was a "deep sense of shock and sadness in Magherafelt" following the death.

"A young man in his 20s has been taken from his family and his community far too soon."
