A controlled explosion has been carried out on a device discovered in County Fermanagh, police have said.

Police received a report of suspicious object in Newtownbutler at about 12:00 GMT on Monday.

The device has been removed for further examination and cordons that were in place on Drumcru Road, Bun Road and Crom Road have now been lifted.

Supt Robert McGowan thanked the local community for their "patience and understanding" during the operation.

"I understand the disruption this can cause, however, our primary aim throughout the course of this operation was to keep our community safe, and I would like to thank our partner agencies for their support with this," he added.

Armagh alert

Meanwhile, an alert in Armagh has ended and residents have been allowed to return home.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said a suspicious object had been discovered in Ballynahone Crescent in the city.

The police later said a number of items had been taken away for forensic examination.

A spokesman added: "We have also received reports of a loud bang being heard in the area on Friday evening.

"We are keeping an open mind in terms of whether this was down to the partial collapse of a building in the area, or something more sinister.

"Our enquiries into both the items recovered and the origins of this noise remain ongoing."
