John Swinney and wife Elizabeth Quigley have first baby

Scotland's Finance Minister John Swinney and his wife, Elizabeth Quigley, have announced the birth of their first child.

The MSP for North Tayside married 大象传媒 journalist Ms Quigley in 2003, when Mr Swinney was leader of the SNP.

Their son, Matthew, was born on Friday morning at Dundee's Ninewells hospital, weighing 7lb 9oz.

Mr Swinney said both he and Ms Quigley, who has multiple sclerosis, were "absolutely thrilled".

He said: "The care we received at Ninewells hospital has been exceptional and we would like to thank all the staff for their kindness and their professionalism. They were absolutely magnificent."

Mr Swinney has two children from a previous marriage.

'Sleepless nights'

Following news of Matthew's birth, First Minister Alex Salmond said: "I have spoken to John to congratulate him on the wonderful news of baby Matthew's safe arrival. I am absolutely delighted for him and Elizabeth.

"I know that John's many friends from right across the political spectrum will be pleased with the birth of his son, and I wish he and Elizabeth all the best in trying to avoid too many sleepless nights over the next few weeks and months."

Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray also congratulated the couple.

Mr Gray said: "This is wonderful news and I am absolutely delighted to pass on my congratulations to John and Elizabeth. I would like to wish them and their new son every happiness in the years to come."

And Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie said: "I am absolutely delighted to hear this happy news and I send my best wishes to John, Elizabeth and their new arrival."
