Police make 999 warning amid phone problems in east Scotland

Phone firm BT says a fault affecting landlines in the east of Scotland has been resolved.

The problem led to a warning from Police Scotland urging people to use their mobile phone to dial 999 if they faced an emergency situation.

Police said the issue affected people in West Lothian, Falkirk, West Stirlingshire, North Lanarkshire and the west of Edinburgh.

But BT Group said only a "small number of people" were affected.

Police said patrols were out in affected areas as a result of the outage and they had asked people to check on vulnerable and elderly neighbours.

BT said the problem was caused by a hardware fault and all services were restored by 06:30.

A spokesman said: "Mobile calls and broadband were not affected and we're sorry for any inconvenience."
