New review of Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue

Progress made by a fire service since a critical report about how it was managed and the training of its staff is to be examined.

The Accounts Commission raised concerns about the Highlands and islands Fire and Rescue Service (HIFRS) in March.

The public watchdog made a series of recommendations.

The Scottish government has commissioned HM Chief Inspector of Fire and Rescue Authorities to review improvements made by HIFRS.

In July, HIFRS chiefs said improvements to crews' training had been made.

A peer support team, involving senior officers from HIFRS and other brigades, was set up to help guide improvements.

Following the team's latest meeting, HIFRS said hard work was paying off but added that some challenges remained.

HIFRS said one area where marked changes had been made was in breathing apparatus training.
