The pod of whales returned to sea after a few hours.

A pod of pilot whales which caused concern in harbour waters in Orkney has headed back out to sea.

The pod of an estimated 13 whales was beside Hatston Pier in Kirkwall near a visiting cruise liner.

There had been fears that the whales could get distressed and beach themselves, but they left after a couple of hours.

It is thought the pod could be part of the same one seen near the islands of Sanday and Stronsay at the weekend.
