Firefighters tackle Dumfries restaurant blaze

Firefighters have been tackling a major blaze which has severely damaged a restaurant in Dumfries.

Crews were called to the Little Italy premises on the town's Moffat Road at about 02:30.

No-one was in the building at the time but a neighbouring house was evacuated. At the height of the incident, about 30 firefighters were at the scene.

Police Scotland said the road was closed for a number of hours but has since reopened.

A spokesman said: "At this time, no one appears to have been injured, however the restaurant has been severely damaged as a result of the fire.

"Police remain at the scene and joint Police and Fire Service investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out in due course."

A message on the restaurant's Facebook page described how the owners had "stood helpless" while the building "burned to the ground".

It confirmed that nobody had been hurt in the incident.

Hundreds of customers have posted messages in response, describing their shock at the "devastating news".
