Robin Jones of Village Bakery in Wrexham crowned baker of the year

A Welsh baker is on a roll after winning a top industry award.

Robin Jones, owner of the Village Bakery in Wrexham, was presented with baker of the year award by TV presenter Esther Rantzen at an awards dinner in London.

Judges praised Mr Jones as a "beacon who sets an example to which other bakers should aspire".

Mr Jones said: I'm just lucky that I have a fantastic, knowledgeable and enthusiastic team behind me."

The company was started by Mr Jones' grandfather in 1934 in Coedpoeth.

Jobs boost

The business has now grown to include five retail shops and a wholesale business supplying supermarkets including Marks and Spencer.

A new bakery manufacturing site is due to open in Wrexham before Christmas bringing 35 jobs to the local area.

Mr Jones said: "I think we're successful because we concentrate on quality, in both products and service.

"But we never sit back, we're always looking to improve."

A Swansea company also won an award at the same event.

Mono Equipment picked up Bakery Supplier of the Year at the annual Baking Industry Awards.
