Lib Dem AM Aled Roberts quits as Wrexham council leader

The Liberal Democrat leader of Wrexham council is to stand down after winning a seat in the Welsh assembly.

Aled Roberts was elected as an AM for the north Wales region this month.

"The people of north Wales deserve a dedicated voice at the assembly and that is what I shall be," he said.

He will stay on as a backbench councillor until local elections next May. Wrexham councillors will elect a new leader next week.

The newly-elected Lib Dem AM for south Wales central, John Dixon, will also give up his role as executive member for health, social care and wellbeing on Cardiff council.

He said: "I don't believe I could do justice to my new job as assembly member whilst retaining this responsibility for social care in Cardiff."
