One person had to be cut out of a vehicle following a crash involving an ambulance and a car in Cardiff.

The A48 Western Avenue was shut for three hours between Waungron Road and Ely Road, but has now reopened.

One person trapped in an Audi car was cut free with hydraulic cutting gear, South Wales fire service said.

Two ambulance staff were treated by colleagues called to the collision just after 17:00 GMT and taken to University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in the city.

A patient being taken to UHW at the time of the accident was also transferred to another ambulance.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said the crash had been "upsetting".

Director of operations Lee Brooks said: "It is always particularly upsetting for colleagues attending incidents involving their own team-mates and we thank the crews involved for their calm and professional handling of a difficult situation.

"Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this evening's incident and we wish those injured a very speedy recovery."

South Wales Police said the crash had caused "significant delays" and were also diverted from the area.
