Firefighter Daniel Jones will be "greatly missed" his boss said

A firefighter who died after suddenly falling ill will be greatly missed by colleagues, his boss has said.

Daniel Jones served south Wales "with immense professionalism and pride", Chief Fire Officer Huw Jakeway said.

Daniel Jones, 30, was on duty when he became unwell on Monday, 3 August.

The fire engine he was travelling in was involved in a minor crash on Lansdowne Road, in Canton, Cardiff, as his colleagues went to his aid.

Wales Air Ambulance administered critical care treatment at the scene.

Mr Jakeway, of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We are privileged to have known him as a colleague and a friend and he will be greatly missed by us all."

He said the service's "thoughts and sincere condolences" were with his family, friends and colleagues "at this very sad time".

Mr Jones joined the service in 2014 as a firefighter at Kenfig Hill Station before joining the crew at Ely Fire Station in 2019.

He also represented the Welsh Fire and Rescue Services Rugby Team.

Kenfig Hill RFC, where Daniel Jones played as flanker also paid tribute.

First team manager Mike Guy said: "Dan was a true young gentleman, very talented, loved his rugby and played alongside his brother at the Mules.

"The family would like you to know how proud they are of Dan.

"In the job he loved, as firefighter, he helped and rescued people, and even in death Dan is doing the same.

"He is giving others the gift of life, by being an organ donor, and this is fetching comfort to his family."
