Four people have been taken to hospital following a crash involving a car and a van on the M4 in south Wales.

The motorway later reopened after being closed in both directions between J28 at Tredegar Park in Newport and J30 at Cardiff Gate.

Casualties were freed using cutting gear after emergency services were alerted at about 13:45 GMT.

The incident led to traffic delays as surrounding areas remained heavily congested.

A total of five ambulances, three fire crews, one rapid response vehicle and two air ambulances - which have now left the scene - responded to call-out.

An ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), members of the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) and a BASICS doctor also assisted.

Public transport was also affected, with Newport Bus altering its X30 service and Stagecoach cancelling its X3 service.
