Police are warning farmers to stay alert after 22 lambs and ewes were found dead.

The dead animals were discovered in a lambing shed in Llannefydd, Conwy.

It is believed a dog panicked the large flock, causing them to move into a corner where a number of them suffocated.

Officers believe the animals may have been penned for some time but there were no visible injuries, such as bite marks.

North Wales Police said the incident happened sometime between 18:30 GMT on 5 February and 08:30 on 6 February.

The force said it was possible that the dog responsible was a working sheepdog, but could not be certain.

It added that further similar incidents could occur and urged farmers in the area to keep a close eye on their flocks.
