Two new ponds have been opened at a wildlife habitat to save a dwindling water vole population in Aberystwyth.

Ceredigion council, the Environment Agency and the Countryside Council for Wales joined forces earlier this year to build ditches and wet areas.

But a grant of £4,000 has helped pay for extra work and two clean water ponds and ditch have been built.

A survey found that water voles living in the Parc y Llyn area had fallen.

Volunteers, including offenders on a community payback scheme worked on the habitat last winter, said Ceredigion council.

They removed trees and scrub to improve ditch and riverside habitats thanks to the Million Ponds Project and Biffaward.

A grant of about £4,000 from the Pond Digging Fund paid for the council to dig two new clean water ponds and ditch.

Parc y Llyn is also home to the Welsh Assembly Government's offices in Aberystwyth.
