A village school earmarked for closure has been given a reprieve by the education minister.

Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd was approved for closure by Denbighshire council last year as part of a primary school review in the Ruthin area.

But it is a faith school and the Church in Wales Diocese of St Asaph had said the need for it remained strong.

The diocese asked the Welsh government to intervene and Huw Lewis has recommended the school remain open.

The council had wanted to move the 22 full-time and seven part-time pupils to Borthyn School in Ruthin.

A spokesman for Denbighshire council said it would now consider the decision.

He added: "We are naturally disappointed at the minister's decision as we feel that the correct recommendation was made."
