Three members of a family who died in a crash on the M4 near Cardiff were returning from a holiday in Morocco.

Louise Evans, 23, her partner Thomas Padden, 20, and his father Stephen Padden, who was 56, all died.

Thomas Padden's mother Suzanne, who is 51, and six-month-old Logan Padden survived the collision.

They were returning to Porthcawl when the single-vehicle crash happened between junctions 32 at Coryton and 33 at Cardiff West on Monday night.

The incident happened at 2330 GMT and the westbound carriageway was closed throughout the night.

Police said the coroner has been informed and liaison officers are supporting the next-of-kin.

Friends paid tribute to surfer Thomas Padden, who was the Welsh junior champion in 2007. All the family were described as keen surfers.

Tom Anderson, chairman of the Welsh Coast Surf Club, said: "We are all in a state of shock.

"The surfing community will put our arms around his baby and do all we can to help. Tom was a very proud dad."

Mrs Padden is a care home worker and Stephen Padden earned a living supplying bait to fishermen.

Police said the red Peugeot 406 was the only vehicle involved in the collision and they have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

In particular, police would like to speak urgently to a couple who are thought to have stopped momentarily after the collision.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who drove past soon afterwards," said Sgt Louise French from the roads policing unit.

"We would also welcome information from anyone who saw the vehicle being driven prior to the collision," she added.
