A town police station is moving to a more central location to provide easier access for residents, say officers.

The new Caerphilly police station at Market Street opens on Monday and will host the neighbourhood policing team.

Gwent Police said it would be open to members of the public during office hours on weekdays and be a base for operations 24 hours a day.

The previous office on Mountain Road will no longer be open to the public.

The move is part of a review of Gwent Police buildings which aims to ensure facilities are fit for modern policing.

Supt Jon Burley said: "Even when the front office of the police station is not open to members of the public, residents can continue to access our service 24 hours a day.

"They can do this by dialling 101 in a non-emergency and 999 in an emergency.

"Police officers and staff will be accessing the new station, even when it is not open to the public, and will be out on patrol providing a visible presence in our communities."
