An independent Scotland would have to renegotiate membership terms with the EU, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Europe editor Gavin Hewitt reports.

Under EU rules an independent Scotland would have to reapply for EU membership - and that would be hard. The EU admits it would be in uncharted waters.

A referendum on Scottish independence is scheduled for the autumn of 2014.
