A motion against the increase is due to be debated by the States in October

Guernsey's Environment Department has confirmed bus fares will increase from 1 August, despite opposition.

Proposals to put up fares from 60p to 拢1 were announced at the end of June.

A motion led by Deputy Matt Fallaize, supported by 22 other deputies, calls for a review of the transport strategy. It goes before the States in October.

The department said it recognised the controversy of the issue and said it thought the placing of the motion had confused some members of the public.

Its board has also written to States members to explain the reasons for sticking to its decision.

The change in charges will also mean holders of the Ormer card, a regular travellers' card, may top up with 20 journeys at a cost of 拢15, which is 75p per journey, or 50 journeys at a cost of 拢25, which is 50p per journey.
