Channel Island languages feature in book series

The native languages of the Channel Islands have featured together for the first time in a new publication.

The Toad and the Donkey was compiled by Guernsey's language development officer Jan Marquis and his Jersey counterpart Geraint Jennings.

The text and translations compare Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark patois and show how writers and speakers have influenced each other.

The book was launched in Jersey at La Fete Normande on Saturday.

The event saw hundreds of Guernesiaise, Jeriaise and Norman French speakers gather to celebrate their native languages and culture.

The book also includes what Mr Jennings described as "texts which reflect attitudes by visitors to the islands on the languages and cultures which they encountered".

The book constitutes volume four of a series called The Lesser Used Languages of Europe, published by Francis Boutle Publishers.
