States employees in Jersey who are made redundant now have more protection.

Under a new law which came into force on 1 January, public workers will be entitled to a payout and time off to look for a new job.

Jobs will be lost as the island's government tries to cut spending by 拢65m over the next three years.

Social Security Minister Deputy Ian Gorst said it was essential employees were protected.

In July the States offered all its public employees the chance to apply for voluntary redundancy and 73 were approved in November, including some senior managerial posts.
