Jersey Rugby Club wants to build a new shop and install floodlights at its ground in St Peter.

The club has applied for planning permission to extend the current building.

The plans come less than a year after a new pavilion and seated stand opened at the site.

The club has applied for planning permission to extend its building in preparation of the possibility of the team being promoted.

Cliff Chipperfield, from the club's executive committee, said they needed to install floodlights if they wanted to play in National League One.

Promotion play-off

He said: "At national one the clubs come from all over England, they don't have to travel on a Friday night like some of our visiting teams, therefore we can only ask them to kick off two hours after they land.

"We could kick off five o'clock, six o'clock or seven o'clock in the evening and we have to be able to put the games on."

Jersey is hosting a promotion play-off at the end of May against the runner up of National League Two North.

Mr Chipperfield said that the club had no plans to move from St Peter and would continue to develop its premises bit by bit as the club's success grew.

The Jersey coach, Ben Harvey, believes up to 10,000 people could watch games if the club progresses up the league structure.
