This spring has been the second driest in Jersey since records began, according to the Met Department.

It has confirmed that during March, April and May, there was just under 46mm of rain, that is about a third of the usual amount for spring.

The driest spring on record was in 1938 when there was only 27.4mm of rain in March, April and May.

Jersey Water said if the exceptionally dry weather continues the company could bring in a hosepipe ban.

Meanwhile work has begun to drain Val de la Mare reservoir which holds 900 million litres of water.

That is enough to supply Jersey's water demand for about five weeks.

The reservoir is now closed until the end of the year while the dam wall is waterproofed.

The dry weather has been a concern for some growers and gardeners but good news for some other businesses in Jersey.

A spokesman from Bartlett and Sons said the dry weather had improved the flavour of the Jersey Royal, and winemaker Dan de Carteret from La Mare Wine Estate is predicting a vintage year if the dry spell continues.
