Jersey's biggest potato growing company has lost a planning appeal to build staff accommodation in an agricultural area.

The Jersey Royal Company wanted to build 10 homes in a field in St Ouen.

But the planning applications panel rejected the proposal, saying the size was inappropriate for Green Zone land.

The States of Jersey Complaints Board has now upheld the panel's decision, although it has urged both sides to find a compromise.

Tom Binet, the managing director of the Jersey Royals Company, said the decision not to allow the building to go ahead was "unfair".

The Jersey Royal Company plan involved pulling down a storage building and building 10 one, two and three-bedroom homes in its place.

The homes were to be built in a traditional farmhouse style in granite, which the planning panel agreed was in keeping with the area.
