Dolphin beached at St Ouen's Bay dies

Rescuers were unable to save a young dolphin washed ashore on St Ouen's Bay in Jersey.

The male juvenile striped dolphin was seen struggling in the surf near the El Tico cafe on Monday evening.

Medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue said he appeared to be "in good body condition".

A spokesman said the dolphin remained near the shore after the high tide and passed away while the medics tried to prepare him for an assessment by a vet.

The vet will be taking samples for analysis to establish the cause of death.

The spokesman said the striped dolphin was "a rare visitor" to the islands, preferring deeper waters.

He said they moved around with the warm oceanic currents, are fast, energetic and acrobatic dolphins and can be found in pods from 10 to 500 members.
