The first large hedgehog sanctuary in the UK opened on Tuesday in Solihull, West Midlands.

The refuge was created by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust in response to a big fall in the number of hedgehogs in the UK.

Around 60 years ago, 36 million hedgehogs used to snuffle in UK gardens. There may be less than a million now.

The hedgehog sanctuary is designed to help the animals flourish.

More than 100 "footprint tunnels" have been created and hidden cameras have been rigged in the park to show where the hedgehogs have been.

The wildlife trust said it hoped to create a central "sanctuary" to allow hedgehogs to repopulate the surrounding area.

The project has been funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
