Before this year, she had never won a match in the main draw at the Australian Open.
She'll next face Czech Denisa Allertova, who beat Sabine Lisicki, in the third round.
Britain's men's number one Andy Murray beat Sam Groth later on Thursday.
Murray managed to handle the Australian's big serve to win 6-0 6-4 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes.
Groth has the fastest serve ever recorded to his name at 163mph, but was broken in his first four service games by Murray.
Murray now moves into the third round where he will face Portugal's Joao Sousa for the third time in four years.
