Gambling companies to stop advertising during live television sport

Britain's top gambling companies have agreed to stop advertising during live sporting programmes.

The Remote Gambling Association came under pressure from the government over how much betting is on television adverts. It's believed the ban could be in force as early as this month.

The biggest impact will be on football. More than 90 minutes of adverts were shown during the football World Cup earlier this year and anti-gambling campaigners say the use of adverts in sports encourages betting.

Horseracing is not included in the ban.

There are also fears it has added to the rise in the amount of problem gamblers and helps fuel under-age gambling.

There have also been calls to end shirt sponsorship by gambling companies, but this ban doesn't go that far.

Nearly 60% of clubs in England's top two divisions have gambling companies as shirt sponsors.
