There was also a competition to design the emblem for the occasion. It was 19-year-old student Edward Robert's logo that caught the eye of the judges, which will be used to publicise the Jubilee.

Queen's Elizabeth's 65 years on the throne was celebrated in a smaller way. For the Sapphire Jubilee, gun salutes rung out at the Tower of London to mark the day. The monarch spent time privately at her home in Sandringham for the day. Hitting the 65 years meant the Queen became the first British Monarch to mark their Sapphire Jubilee.

In June 2012, there was a big celebration for the 60th Diamond Jubilee with lots of events and tours of the UK and Commonwealth. Crowds gathered in the Mall for the Buckingham Palace Concert, where Ed Sheeran, Will.i.Am and many more singers performed.

And despite some pretty bad weather, one of the big showpiece events was the Jubilee River Pageant where loads of boats of all shapes and sizes followed a Royal boat in a procession down the Thames.

The Ruby Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 1992 was a smaller event, and there wasn't any big public celebrations. To mark the 40 years, the monarch did a walkabout in a village near Sandringham, Norfolk, where the Queen has a private home, to visit the public. Other events included a gala which the Queen attended, trees were planted and the Queen agreed to give Sunderland city status.

The Queen's first big Jubilee celebration was in 1977 for Her Majesty's Silver anniversary - 25 years. During the summer, the Queen took on a large scale tour of the UK because she wanted to meet as many people as possible. No other sovereign had visited so much of Britain, in such a short space of time.

The occasion was celebrated with large scale parties and parades throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth throughout 1977, peaking in June with the official "Jubilee Days", held to coincide with the Queen's Official Birthday.
