The village with a big bird poo problem

They say it's lucky to be pooped on by a bird, but people living in a village in Lincolnshire aren't feeling very lucky...

Cars (and sometimes people) are being covered in poo as thousands of starlings dance in the sky at this time of year.

Between October and March, the birds swirl together forming murmurations, which look spectacular but are proving to be a bit of a nightmare in Great Gonerby.

One resident said: "Everyone found it fascinating to start with, but now they're fed up with it."

Why do murmurations happen?

Starlings will gather together around dusk to form these mesmerising murmurations in winter.

They happen over the starlings' roosting site, which is where they go to rest.

It's thought they do this aerial dance to help protect themselves from predators by confusing anything which might fancy a starling as dinner, while also keeping themselves warm in the cold weather.

People in Great Gonerby say the birds are becoming a "big pain".

Another resident said: "Even just going out the front door you end up with poo on your hands because it's all over the handles."

Someone else said: "They're [the birds ] a thick black cloud, and you can hear them and you can hear the showers of poo coming down."

It sounds disgusting but it is drawing in the crowds who want to see this beautiful, but pooey, phenomenon.
