Scotland have been knocked out of Euro 2024 after losing to Hungary by a goal which came in the 100th minute.

A draw would have been enough to keep their hopes of progressing to the next stage of the competition alive.

But the late goal squashed their chance to make history, by reaching the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time ever.

After the game, Scotland captain Andy Robertson said: "Thank you to the country, because we felt everyone behind us, we knew the excitement back home, sorry for letting you down".

The match was stopped for almost seven minutes in the second half as Hungary striker Barnabas Varga got treatment on the pitch and then was taken to hospital after a mid-air clash with Scotland keeper Angus Gunn.

Hungary's players helped bring on the stretcher as others gathered around their team-mate.

Marco Rossi, who is the Hungary manager, said Varga is "healthy and not under any kind of risks".

But he did say that if the country do progress to the knockout stage of the tournament, Varga won't be playing as he needs an operation on his fractured cheek bone.

Hungary's goal came from a counter attack as Scotland pushed to try and get a late goal of their own.

After defending Scotland's efforts, they broke up the pitch and Kevin Csoboth manged to score past Angus Gunn.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said the team are disappointed as they wanted to be the first team to come out of the group stage.

He said football can be cruel but you have to "lick your wounds, you have to refresh yourself and you have to go again".
