Norwich theatre celebrates landmark anniversary

Norwich Theatre Royal is celebrating 250 years of the first theatre opening on its site, just months after undergoing a £10m refurbishment to help bring it into the 21st century.

The champagne corks have been popping at Norwich Theatre Royal to mark the 250th anniversary of the curtain going up at the first theatre on its site.

As part of the celebrations, the grand draw of the theatre's fund-raising raffle has been made.

The raffle helped to raise £10m for the venue's facelift, which was unveiled on Tuesday, 13 November, 2007 with an operatic performance by Glyndebourne On Tour.

Chief executive Peter Wilson said the revamp - which meant the city centre building was closed for seven and a half months last year - has been worth it.

"The colours in the auditorium I think are fantastic," he said.

"The fact is the foyers are now absolutely classically wrapped around the auditorium.

"We've got loos on both floors and the frontage of the building has got plenty of light and space and air and circulation space.

"It now makes sense - it's a proper grown-up, modern theatre for the 21st century and right for Norwich and Norfolk," he added.
