This make combines all the fun of some basic cooking,
along with your arts and craft skills. Don't eat the dough you make
though as it'll taste really yuk.
Dough Ingredients
500g (1lb) plain white flour
Extra flour for dusting the worktop
250g (8oz) salt
25g (8 fl oz) cold water
Equipment
Mixing bowl
Measuring jug
Rolling pin
Heart shaped pastry cutters
Baking tray
Cooling rack
Red acrylic paint
Red glitter
PVA glue
Clear varnish, Small paint brush
Old newspaper, small magnets
Method
1. With an adults help, turn the oven on to a low heat. 100C or
gas mark 3 will be enough.
2. First make your salt dough. Place the flour
and salt into a large mixing bowl and mix together.
3. Stir half the water into the dry mixture and
mix with your fingers. Draw the dough together and keep adding a
little more water until the dough is soft enough to knead.
If the mixture is too crumbly continue adding the
water drop by drop. The dough is ready when it's firm enough not
to stick to your fingers, but not so dry that it is crumbly.
4. Lightly dust a smooth surface and then turn
the dough out onto it. Knead it for at least 10 minutes. You know
it's ready when it is smooth, pliable and gently warm from the heat
of your hands.

5. Roll out the dough mixture until it is about
0.5cm thick.
6. Using the pastry cutters, cut out heart shapes
from the dough and put them onto a baking tray. You could try cutting
out different size hearts.
7. With an adults help - carefully put the baking
tray into the oven. Cook the dough hearts on the low heat for around
1陆 to 2 hours or until the dough is dry.
8. One the hearts are dry, carefully take them
out of the oven and place on a baking try to cool.
Decorating the hearts
Make sure to get out lots of old newspaper for
this bit and wear an apron or some old clothes as you might get
messy.
1. Paint the front and edges of the hearts with
red paint and then leave them to dry.
2. Once the heart is dry, paint it with a coat
of clear varnish to give it a nice shiny finish. Again, leave them
to dry.
3. When the varnish has dried, carefully paint
on it with the PVA glue in the places you want the glitter to act
as a decoration. You can see from the picture at the top of the
page, we've tried a variety of styles.
4. To turn it into a fridge magnet, use the glue
to stick a magnet onto the back. Make sure to let the glue dry -
and you're all finished.
If you don't want to make a magnet, you could turn
it into a pendant or a broach.
We also tried covering a heart completely in glue
and rolling it in the glitter. Very messy, but good fun and the
heart looked fab!
