NNREC report 2000/2001
logo

From the Chairperson:

It is time to produce the Annual Report to the AGM. Another year has gone since the Office Bearers and I were elected.

During this year a lot of things have happened. I am indeed proud of what has been achieved and the good partnership work of NNREC.

The NNREC has been proposed as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by the CRE. The work programme for 2001 – 2002 is well on the way.

To state a few of the things, we are engaged in, and the programme output:

Race Relation (Amendment) Act 2000 has greater effect upon the NNREC

·NNREC continued participation in the Norwich Prison Race Relations Committee

·We have recruited an additional Administrative Assistant post funded through the Community Fund

Developing the use of CRE Standard for All in Norfolk to tackling racism schools

Substantial resources and support given to the Black & Minority Ethnic Voluntary Network Eastern Region

·NNREC adoption and implementation of CRE Core Standards is well on the way

·Additional support and advice provided to the Norwich Refugee Support Group

·Participation in the Norfolk Criminal Justice Liason Group for which I am a member

·Participation in the Norfolk Police Authority Equalities Management

Erinn Project

Following a recent extensive survey within the Norfolk Health Authorities and Trusts "Eradicating Racism in the Norfolk NHS" a report was launched on 11th May 2001.

This report has given us an insight into the problems and opportunities to address the issues and we are awaiting response / actions on the recommendations highlighted in that report.

The following pages will give you much information on the work that has been done and is still continuing through the tireless workers of NNREC.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our main funding bodies:

Commission for Racial Equality, Norwich City Council, Broadland District Council, South Norfolk Council, North Norfolk District Council, Norfolk County Council, Breckland District Council, Borough of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, South Denes Single Regeneration Bid.

As Chairman of NNREC, I have been able to attend many city and county events to raise our profile and actively participate at our local level. In addition I have represented NNREC at regional and national levels to ensure our voices and needs are heard. I have attended the REC Chairs meetings at CRE Head Office, London.

We had the pleasure of visiting the House of Commons to meet our MPs, and their visits to our office here in Norwich to exchange views and opinions.

I am grateful to Mr. Charles Clarke, Home Office Minister, and Dr. Ian Gibson MP, for their continued support and encouragement.

This support and the support of all our MPs in Norfolk is essential. Norfolk is now more visibly in action to tackle racism especially in rural areas. Let us continue this work to the benefit of all. My thanks to Ms. Rose Girdlestone Vice – Chair, Mr. Gerardo Rodriguez Treasurer, Sub Committee Chairs / members, Executive Committee, full Council and all volunteers. My thanks to all members of staff for their perseverance and commitment. Last but not least I would like to thank Ms. Anne Matin Director, for her devoted support to all staff in every aspect. I am, more than any, greatly indebted to her for the prodigious help given to me to carry out the responsibility of Chairman to the full.
