Title - walks and cycle rides

Route takes in St Walstan's burial site

This is an undemanding excursion through attractive countryside. The 15-mile ride starts and ends in the old market town of Wymondham.

MAP: OS Landranger 144 Thetford and Diss, Breckland and Wymondham, (grid ref 107020).

STARTING POINT: Wymondham, which is just north of the A11 about 6 miles from Attleborough and 8 miles from Norwich. Look out for signs to town Green on the northern side of the town. Then look for a sign to Little Melton (B1135) along Melton road. This leads you to a staggered crossroads where you cross the B1135 and head towards Little Melton and Wramplingham. Keep on the road, (do not take the left turn to Wramplingham) and continue for a few miles until you reach a war memorial. Turn right here onto Market Lane.

You will soon see an abandoned church tower standing next to a very similar one attached to a church. After a mile or two, turn left and then, when you reach a T-junction with the B1108, turn right. Take the first left turn towards Bawburgh and just before you come into the village on a bridge over the River Yare, turn left to see the church, burial site of St Walstan, patron saint of agriculture and farm workers.

Go back to the road and turn left, keeping the pub on your right and the mill on your left. Turn left at the T-junction towards Marlingford and continue riding along the course of the Yare. In Marlingford turn left by The Bell. Turn left at the next T-junction and cross the river again. Turn right at the crossroads onto the B1108 towards Barford and then, after 2 miles, turn left along the Street towards Wramplingham and Wymondham.

Carry on through Wramplingham, past a collection of fine, large houses, and out past the church which is on your left. After about 3 miles you will reach a junction. Turn right here and you will reach the staggered crossroads you crossed on the outward journey. Go straight over and into Wymondham and down towards Town Green.
