Children in Essex love Harry Potter!

Vote for the favourite children's book in the East!

Are your children huge Harry Potter fans, or do they still enjoy classics like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? To celebrate World Book Day, we're running a poll to find out: what is the favourite children's book in the East?

Every generation of children has their favourite literary characters who capture the imagination and the fire up their passion for reading. Across the East, each county has their own favourite children's book and we want to find out which one's king of the pile.

These are the top titles that get lent out the most from the shelves across the region:

Northamptonshire

Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon - Orion Books
Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb - F Simon

In 'Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb', by Francesca Simon, a stinkbomb becomes a deadly weapon in Horrid Henry's long running tussle between two double agents; Moody Margaret and Perfect Peter. It also creates chaos in his team project to build the Parthenon and gets a new pet tarantula. "I love the funny pictures and the way he manages to upset everyone so much!", quipped one young fan.

Cambridgeshire

Where's Wally by Martin Handford

'Where's Wally? The Wonder Book' by Martin Handford takes its young readers on a journey to some amazing places like the Corridors of Time, on a tour of the Cake Factory and to see the Fantastic Flower Garden. Wherever you go there are characters and things to seek out. It's a book which appeals to puzzlers (and those with a keen eye!) of all ages.

'Starring Tracy Beaker' by Jacqueline Wilson is the most borrowed book in Norfolk. In this latest book, Tracy is determined to be in the new school play; 'A Christmas Carol'. The key question is will she be the star?听One young reader said: "I really enjoyed this book. I could really identify with the characters and understand what they were saying".

Suffolk

Jaqueline Wilson - published by Random House
Candyfloss by Jaqueline Wilson

Another book by Jacqueline Wilson, 'Candyfloss', was the most popular choice among young readers visiting Suffolk libraries.听When Floss' mum and her new husband move to Australia, Floss decides to stay at home with Dad. They enjoy a relaxed life on a diet of chip butties and candyfloss from the local funfair. But then, disaster strikes and they find themselves homeless. Will their new fairground friends help out? Could Dad and Floss be destined for a life on the road?

Essex

Harry Potter by JK Rowling - Bloomsbury
Harry Potter by JK Rowling

JK Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' see Harry in his sixth year at Hogwarts. He has to deal with becoming a teenager and the return of Lord Voldermort. The creature, the Horcrux's, are pure evil, and one young reader said they make you want to help Harry and Professor Dumbledor. He added: "When Dumbledore dies, it brings tears to your eyes and you really feel for Harry". This series of books听has captivated adults as well as younger readers and some have argued that this book in particular has been written to appeal to an older age group.听听

Bedfordshire

Charlie & Choc Factory - Roald Dahl - Puffin
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, R Dahl

The timeless classic, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl is as popular as ever - particularly in Luton libraries where there have been a number of events based around the book about the little boy who loves chocolate. It was based largely on the author's own passion for chocolate which started when he was at Repton School. A manufacturer sent parcels of new types of chocolate for pupils to taste. It struck a cord for one little boy from Luton who said: "I love this book because I like chocolate. This book is funny and interesting".

So, there you have it, the county by county list of favourites.听But, what's the favourite book of all? Which of the six books is top of your child's list? Take part in our vote by using the button on the right of this page. The closing date to vote is noon on Wednesday, 7th March 2007.

The end...
