My nightmare

By Emma Moss, 16, from Northampton.

A sudden chill crept down my spine; this is what made me awake from my sleep. I looked around to see my bedroom dusty and dark. I threw the covers back and stepped out of bed. I reached to the light switch and when I turned it on I cried with the horror the sight brought. My bed was ridden with worms; my wardrobe bulged with cockroaches, my desk filled with spiders and my floor covered with snakes. Bugs and creepy crawlies engulfed my room so much so that I only recognised about half of them.

I looked back to where my hand lies on the wall and saw the woodlice creep up my arm. I turned and grabbed the door handle, but it was white hot and it scolded my hand upon touch. My hand felt like it had been placed on fire and it was slowly melting away. I gave out an almighty scream only to find my mouth had been stuffed with some sort of cloth. I tried to pull it out, but each time I tried, the cloth would wedge further and further into my mouth.

I felt more and more bugs crawling up my legs and each stopping to take a big bite. I ran towards the window, but the faster I ran, the further away the window became. I stopped for a second to catch my breath when I felt a snake fall on to my shoulders. The snake was heavy and forced my body to the ground. I wanted to get up, but the snake was too heavy. I gave up and just lay there feeling more bugs take bites out of my flesh.

Suddenly the walls and ceiling started to close in on me. The bugs were pushed into the centre of the room and I was pulled under them all. The bugs were now taking chunks out of my face and I could feel the blood all over my body.

I was getting ready to take my last breath when I saw a beam of light. It was the window! With the last ounce of energy I had left, I forced my arm up and stretched for the window. As soon as my hand touched it I was pulled so fast through the window, I landed in the hallway!

It was silent! I walked slowly into the kitchen. Mum was preparing dinner for that night.

"Mum!" I said so relieved to see her. I ran up to her and gave her a hug, but she did not hug me back. I looked at her and she carried on chopping the carrots as if she did not see me. I stepped back to watch her work and I noticed how dull and grey it looked. I tried the lights, but they did not work. It was then that I noticed how loud the clock sounded.

When I turned around, Mum was gone. I called out to her, but there was no reply. I looked back at the clock and stared at it for a while. Something was not right about the clock. After a while I heard harsh, hushed voices. They were coming from the office. I walked cautiously towards the door and pushed it open slightly so that I could see what was going on. Mum and Dad were talking, but I could not hear what about. I heard the odd word like, 'feeling,' and, 'flickering lights,' and, 'she's dead,' but I had no idea what they were going on about!

My sister appeared behind me. She was calling out to Mum and Dad. I quickly gave her a signal to be quiet, but she ignored me. I looked hard at her. She was older. A lot older.

Mum and Dad appeared behind me and walked through me to hug my sister. It was then I noticed how old my parents were. They had so many wrinkles. As I turned around again I caught a glimpse in the mirror. It was the ugliest thing I had ever seen.

It was ME!! I looked like I had come back from the dead. Like I had been bitten by hundreds of bugs that had crawled into my coffin. And I looked like I had been rotting in that coffin for over ten years. I looked back at my family and heard the worst words in the world.

"It felt like she was with me, it felt like Emma was there!"

I turned back to the mirror and felt heart broken. I had realised that I was DEAD!!
