Monday Night Sport v FencingGeoff, Jon and Tim went to find out and compete at a gentleman鈥檚 sport, fencing. The TasksTo start off they, were shown the basic foot work required by the coach, making sure that feet were at right angles to each other, knees were bent, free arm back and they were taught small steps and big lunges. Then it was time to kit up and get the swords in their hands. Their first task was target practice whilst also incorporating the movement they had learned. They practiced by hitting Tristan on the chest from standing, then with a step and then with a lunge. After the practices, Tristan gave them one go at each, and then he scored them marks out of ten.
Help playing audio/video Holding CampTristan Hale is the Northamptonshire Sports Volunteer Officer at present, but has been a professional fencing coach for the last six years. Tristan still coaches and trains in the county, but is also a senior national referee and听 working towards becoming an international referee. Moulton College is a possible London 2012 holding camp, with fencing being one of the sports on offer there. The Northampton Fencing Club is based at The John Ashby Sports Hall at Moulton College. Sessions run on Thursday evenings between 8 and 10pm, with a 12 week beginner's course running from 7 to 8pm Towcester is the other place to do fencing in the county, at Towcester Center for Leisure.
