Superstar DJ, King of the doodles and tea maker extraordinaire; Mr Scruff is one of the most exciting and diverse acts around today. All of these accolades made his sojourn in Belfast's Stiff Kitten on Friday a welcome excuse for a party. The four hour set allowed Scruff to build the excitement in waves, ensuring he kept the attention of every attendee. Easing the fans into the revelry he kicked things off with a little soul music - including legends like James Brown - the perfect person to entice the crowds from the bar to the dance floor. Every track seamlessly blended with the next so there was a logical progression from start to finish. The set list had clearly, as ever, been very carefully considered. As soon as the hip hop started the whole room seemed to swarm with people eager to dance and see the graphics displayed on huge screens either side of the DJ. Obviously technically gifted he also demonstrated impressive scratching skills - and one and all seemed to be willing to "wobble those legs" as suggested by his cartoons. He had everyone's attention now and new tracks were excellently received. Graphics showed the music being turned "up to eleven" to ensure maximum loudness and bass - and even he seemed to begin to dance a bit harder because of it. From soul to hip hop, hip hop to funk, jazz, ska and drum 'n' bass - all the musical bases were covered... the only thing missing was a decent brew. Kathy McWhirter Gig Details Related Links | ||
