Live review
Sky Larkin, Escape Act
Sky Larkin's Wednesday night gig was undeniably disappointing, not as a result of anything the rather charming band did, but because only a handful of people turned up to such a good show. It's a real pity, particularly because the Leeds three piece proved perfectly able to recapture the indie pop magic of their debut album 'The Golden Spike' live on stage.

The group's energetic support, Escape Act, also came across as a band with talent, winning the audience over with their polished sound and amicable stage persona. Playing clear, guitar driven indie, the Belfast quartet got a great reaction as they show-cased songs from their first album 'Loosely Based on Fiction', along with newer material. They didn't stay on for too long but the small crowd certainly liked what it heard.

Bounding to the front a few minutes after Escape Act, Sky Larkin then began their own short but sweet set. After so many positive reviews of The Golden Spike, it was great to see the band's promise translating well onto the stage as they played their sunny style of music with real flair.
The act was not completely flawless though. 听At times, lead singer Katie's guitar cut out but the whole group did their best to keep the audience entertained with friendly chatter when they had to stop playing and fiddle with dials. Thankfully, the band recovered quickly from these awkward moments and still managed to skilfully perform a good selection of songs off their fine debut record.

The group ran into only one other small problem when Katie's bright vocals occasionally started to be drowned out by the melodic guitars and drum set. 听This was a bit of a shame because it masked some of the songs' quirky lyrics but didn't become frustrating. In fact, Katie's singing, when clearly audible, was one of the best things about the act. She literally didn't miss a note. 听

Judging by this performance, Sky Larkin already know how to put on a good show and with just a little more technical polish will move up to being a great live band. Hopefully next time they come to our shores they'll attract the large audience they genuinely deserve.
