"I always had mixed feelings about living in Belfast. It was a love hate thing…"

The story...

As Elaine’s plane descended into Belfast City airport, she looked out at the place she now called home. As a mixture of happy and sad feelings churned inside her, something in the distance caught Elaine’s eye…

Comment: I am Elaine's cousin, living in California now after growing up in Belfast and North Antrim. I fly into Belfast about twice a year and look down on the same Ormeau Park where my sister walks her dogs every day. It has taken me a long time to finally feel at home 6,500 miles from where I grew up and even though I have a family here in California and am more settled than at any other time in my adult life I still only miss the part of me that belongs to the hills and coastline of North Antrim.

Comment: i was just browsing your site when I came across Elaine's story. We went to school together and actually met up a few months ago after 20 years.I know exactly what she is talking about because I now live away from N.I. and travel all the time, with similar feelings when I return home.Pass on my comments if you like.
Also came across another friends story while on your site(Dennis McCrum and his fear of heights).Quite the coinsidence.

Comment: Makes me yearn for Antrim, for Belfast. Not been there since my childhood, visiting at summertime my Gaston cousins... Makes me ache for the salty tang of those northern vowels and the crested tips of the whipped up seas. A beautiful story Elaine. Enjoy the green of the grass, wherever you find it...

This is one of Elaine's poems which was translated into Russian and included in a compendium launched by the British Council in St Petersburg. This was why Elaine was returning from a trip to Russia in her story
