The
Expert & The Pocket Expert books
Author - Dr D.G Hessayon Review
by Trevor Edwards August 2002
Over
the next few weeks I will be reviewing some
of the books in this invaluable series of books.
I am proud to say that over the last 20 years
or more I have maintained a collection of the
books obtaining most of them as and when they
have been published. I have frequently found
them to be a valuable reference asset.
Beginner
or seasoned gardener - the Expert series that
ranges in price from 拢5.99 to 拢8.99,
has something to offer everyone, from specific
plant groups to the planning and design of a
garden.
Each of the collection of books employs the
same formula of low price, high quality, clarity
and instant accessibility which make the series
excellent value for money. I am advised that
over 40 million copies have been sold worldwide,
making the Expert the No 1 gardening books series.
Beginners would be well advised to buy all the
titles in the Expert series.
The
Expert books cut through the technical jargon
to give the gardener the information he or she
needs to know in order to do the job properly
and grow plants successfully. Dr Hessayon emphasises
individual choice - there are no 'correct' colour
schemes or layouts. He explains the main options
available to the gardener, but firmly believes
that gardens are a matter of personal choice
and enjoyment.
To my knowledge no other publisher has improved
on the formula for getting facts on the page
in the most immediately intelligible manner.
Expert gives you the essential information on
every gardening subject. The Expert series phenomenal
success proves that every kind of gardener trusts
and relies on Expert advice. Expert books portray
the kind of results that any ordinary gardener
can expect. The diagrams are clearly drawn and
well labelled for maximum comprehension.
The Expert books have never been glossy coffee
table books, they are far more useful and practical
than that. Whether on a bookshelf or in the
kitchen drawer, they have always been at hand,
ready to be consulted, telling us all about
the plants in our garden or the ones we saw
at the garden centre - but that left a gap.
In recent years Dr Hessayon has published a
new series of concise and handy guides 聳
The Pocket Expert a handy size that you can
take anywhere, they are packed with the clear
and concise information the gardener really
needs.
At
only 拢3.99, they are small enough for
purse or pocket, packed with 128 pages of information
in the Expert style - drawings, charts and photographs
on all-colour pages with clear, no-nonsense
text. The Pocket Tree & Shrub Expert, The
Pocket Flower Expert and The Pocket
Garden Troubles Expert were published in 2001.
In 2002 two more have been added - The Pocket
Vegetable Expert and The Pocket House Plant
Expert. 'There will be more to follow' says
author Dr D G Hessayon, 'Some will be digests
of favourite titles, but there will also be
brand new ones'. I look forward to The Pocket
DIY
Expert which will be published in March 2003.
