The Pocket
Garden Troubles Expert Book Review by
Trevor Edwards 19 September 2002
Yet
another in the Pocket sized series of what is
regarded as the World聮s best-selling gardening
books.
This
one is a unique catalogue of many of the gardening
problems and troubles, which will be prevalent
in both the small and large garden.
Just
imagine a convenient pocket sized 125-page reference
book which simply identifies and offers solutions
to the troubles experienced when growing vegetables,
fruit, roses, trees and shrubs together with
lawn troubles - wow!
The
book is divided into 14 chapters. Each chapter
covering a specific type of plant subject. Each
of the troubles is clearly illustrated in full
colour. In the case where a pest causes the
damage, not only is the plant damage illustrated
but also the 聭beastie聮 responsible
for the problem. Both are clearly useful to
identify and illuminate the many possible difficulties
that we may encounter in our gardens.
It
must be remembered with some comfort that we
are unlikely to experience the hundred of troubles
identified in this Garden Doctor聮s hard
book.
Chapter
10 deals with Pest and Disease Control, guiding
us in methods of preventing trouble before it
starts. Clear and simple explanations of insecticides
- systemic, insect contact, and leaf contact
types are explained. Fungicides are likewise
explained, falling into the two basic types
- systemic and preventive.
Chapter
11 devotes 16 pages to illustrate 46 different
garden weeds. The illustrations cleverly show
the weed in seeding and mature plant status
together with an indication as to whether it
is an annual, biennial or perennial garden dweller.
Chapter
12 devotes 13 pages covering lawn weeds and
includes illustrations of 30 different lawn
weeds which may spoil one聮s attempts to
achieve the perfect lawn. Each weed illustration
has been colour coded to indicate whether the
weed can be killed by one application, may require
second application or will require a second
application.
To
summarise - this Pocket Power Pack is an invaluable
choice for any gardener and surprisingly it
only costs only 拢3.99.
Let聮s
hope you do not need to refer to it too often!
