Colette O'Hare
Colette O'Hare

Colette O'Hare is originally from the Oldpark, and has recently returned home to live in Belfast after more than 40 years in London. She has had a variety of careers - including teaching in adult education - and working as a feature writer on a number of women's magazines - the names of which she claims to have forgotten.

Mistake by Colette O'Hare

You have a strange smell

Not unpleasant

Just strange

Your skin is not calm

Your eyes remain watchful

You taste wrong

Dilute and bitter,

Brackish to my mouth

Its not the same, I want to be with him

I know your body

You are a good friend

Sturdy, solid, without subtlety

We鈥檝e made this mistake before

Nobody鈥檚 fault

I鈥檓 here aren鈥檛 I?

You sit on the end of the single bed

Listening to Capital Gold

The little collection of pornography

And I still see in you

The orphan at the mercy of the Christian Brothers

The borstal boy

The adolescent recruit

Twenty-eight days

For striking a comrade soldier

You asked me once

After a marathon session at the Chippenham

I fell over and broke my glasses

You asked me if I loved you

I said yes

It was the truth

It was never mentioned again

To me there are different kinds of love

To you people don鈥檛 go back on their word.
