Mel Lewis
Mel Lewis

As a man in his 40's I prefer to think of myself as growing young. There is a little voice telling me that reaching "middle age" is not something to worry about....it simply will never happen! I have been writing poetry on and off for years. I prefer plain speaking so the reader knows where I am coming from - I hope you enjoy the poems as much as I enjoyed writing them - I have more! If you wish to read more, my website is www.skyserver.co.uk/poetry

Worlds End by Mel Lewis

Do you think that you or me

Would jump into a raging sea

To gallantly try to save another

A stranger, a child, sister or brother

Then why is it we treat nature with

A contempt that defies our will to live

We hopelessly and recklessly plunder

While our world replies with rain and thunder

Did our forefathers who fished and farmed

Know that they were doing harm

By making life better for themselves

and massing food upon the shelves

Now we no longer walk for need

Our penchant for waste displays our greed

Our want for cars and material things

Is justified with recycling bins

We听constantly search for life听elsewhere

Scanning space, we know it's there

When we find it, oh there'll be a fuss!

But are they intelligent like us?

Do they watch from far away

As we destroy the very place we play

Until all that's left of conquering man

Shall be carbon footprints in the sand

Will听our听grandchildren wake one day

To see the sky has gone away

And as they watch our planet burn

Will they blame us who never learned?

A poem with layer upon layer听of meaning.听 Again, the mass of detail works really well.
