WHAT
THE VOLUNTEERS THOUGHT
Report 1 - Sophie
I had a fun time planting the wild cherry tree. The ground
was quite hard so after we picked a good spot I got a big
spade to help me dig. It was a wet day though and once
we put the spade into the ground it was quite easy to dig.
Once I got deep enough we put in the little wild cherry
tree, my hands got all dirty and muddy here, but I didn鈥檛
mind because it was fun. Once I had the tree in place,
and covered it with soil, I stamped all around it to make
sure it stayed in place. I hope my tree grows to be nice
and big.
Report 2 - Amy
I thought planting the trees was great fun, but I didn鈥檛
like getting my hands dirty! It was hard digging in the
soil because every now and then you hit a rock! I planted
a silver birch. It will look really nice when it gets bigger.
I stamped the soil down around my tree really well. It
was quite hard because the soil was thick. We planted them
in the school garden. There are other trees there, when
all our new trees grow the garden will look beautiful.
Report 3 - Samantha
I enjoyed planting the trees; it was really fun, and nice
to get out of the classroom for a while! The one bad thing
was when I got stung by a nettle, but it didn鈥檛 hurt
that bad really. My partner Cameron got the spade and dug
the hole, I pulled the soil back and held the tree in place,
it was a rowan tree. The soil felt very soft and wet on
my hands when I was putting it all around the tree. I had
to do this because it keeps the tree steady and this will
help it grow to be strong.
Report 4 - Paul
I liked feeling the nice soft soil. I loved planting the
rowan. When I was digging the soil I got my spade stuck,
I had to ask teacher for help! My friend Chloe helped me
by holding the tree in position while I pushed the soil
all around. My hands got really dirty, there were lots
of little worms in the soil, but I was careful not to hurt
them.
Report 5 - Andrew
I had fun planting the baby trees, because I got to dig
a hole with a big spade. I put soil all around the little
tree when Megan was holding it in place; this will make
it strong and sturdy. I washed my hands when I went back
into class, I think its important to do that after digging
in soil. I think my tree will look nice when it is older,
it will also help the environment because trees make air
nice and clean.
TREE FOR ALL CAMPAIGN - BACKGROUND
Schools and youth groups will be adding a touch of colour
and life to the school or community grounds. The tree
planting is part of the Woodland Trust's 'Tree For All'
campaign supported by the Northern Ireland Environment
Agency.
Earlier this year schools and groups had the chance to
apply for a free pack of 30 trees, with the choice of
either a copse pack (which includes birch, rowan and
cherry) or a hedge pack (the likes of hawthorn, hazel
and holly. The packs arrived with the youngsters
the week beginning 10th November.
Patrick Clegg of the Woodland Trust comments: "Because
of modern lifestyles, many children are growing up with
little connection to the natural environment. Througth
Tree For All, we want children to grow up with a real
love and understanding of nature and woodland."
Schools and groups are alsoinvited to take part in a
planting campaign next spring and can apply online at
